'Home is your corner of the world'. ♥ (Ilse Crawford) The biggest job of a military spouse is creating your corner of the world, that refuge, that safe haven for the military member to return to. Said Charles Dickens, "Home is a name, a word, it is a strong one; stronger than magician ever spoke, or spirit ever answered to, in the strongest conjuration." It is a big task to undertake--in our current world it's nearly a war in and of itself--to create such a magical sanctuary, to keep the home-fire burning bright while our spouses go out into the world to make the world safer, to make it better. The 48th SFSG recognizes the troubles you face and our hope is to bear you up, to give you a respite (if only once a month) and to give you support in any way we can, so that you in turn can provide that respite and support for your families. We are here to help you win your battles and to be triumphant in your endeavors to create a safe haven within whatever walls you may reside.

April 28, 2011
48th SF Spouses’ Group Council Meeting

Items Discussed:

I. Becoming an official Private Organization.
            A. The Council discussed the pros (self-regulation and government, greater room for growth, greater capacity to support the spouses) and cons (possible loss of partnership with Squadron and/or Defender Council, to include funds) of becoming a PO.
            B. After discussion pros and cons, Council decided it is the group’s best interest to go private.
            C. Council also decided to proceed in such a way as to assure further partnership and cooperation with the Defender Council. Meaning that the Council will inform Squadron leadership and Defender Council of our wish to go private and that we will seek out their continued support.

II. Group name and mission and Council positions.
            A.  In becoming a Private Organization the group discussed what name to be known by and what purpose/mission we would fulfill.
            B.  It was decided that our name would remain the 48th Security Forces Spouses’ Group and that our mission would be three-fold: 1) to support the Spouses of the 48th Security Forces Squadron, 2) to support the families of the 48th Security Forces Squadron and 3) to provide support for the 48th Security Forces Squadron.
            C. The Council also decided for P.O. purposes on the following titles/positions:  President- Miranda Marrott, Vice President- Kelli Buck, Secretary A- Ashley Parish, Secretary B- Rebecca Dean

III. Fundraisers.
            A. 4th of July.
                        1. Council, after discussing what funds will be handed over when leadership fully exchanges, understands the dire need of this fundraiser for our group.
                        2. Due to new regulations regarding health and safety inspections (baking in the base Chapel and having goods inspected) the Council decided it would be best to ask for volunteers to: 1) provide supplies—cookie batter (pre-made, store-bought Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter, and Sugar cookie dough and possibly brownie dough), plastic wrap, ribbon; 2) provide equipment—cookie sheets, oven mitts, utensils; 3) provide time for baking on appointed day.
                        3. Volunteers will also be needed to work bake sale booth.
                        4.  After negotiations with Defender Council, we have secured the 48th SF Spouses’ Group’s earnings from bake sale, minus $50 given to Defender Council for the use of their tables and booth.
            B. The Council also discussed future fundraisers as becoming a P.O. will give more opportunities for the group to earn money.
                        1.  Ideas for possible future fundraisers discussed were: a Service Auction, a Spa night with a flat fee at the door, 3rd party fundraisers such as those that involve restaurants.  Also it was brought up that possibly as a P.O. our group would be privy to a ‘Fun Pack’ once a year from outdoor rec and this could possibly be used for a fundraiser or for a social or other activity (to help save money) and that we could possibly also use advertising through @Ease magazine to help raise awareness for fundraisers or other functions.
                        2.  The Council also discussed the idea of group dues or donations to help with costs of various activities and programs of the group’s.  At the time we are undecided on this issue and may leave it for a vote from the Spouse’s.
                         3.  The Council has in the past relied on donated items for Welcome Baskets to help with costs and discussed further relying on them.

IV. Programs and Activities of the 48th SF Spouses’ Group
            A. Welcome baskets.  This is a big item from the get-go with the new Council as new families are constantly arriving.  We discussed ideas for what food to include in the baskets (spaghetti?) and how much money per basket to budget for.  We need further information before we can make solid decisions.
            B.  Meals for moms.  Also a big program and needs to be in order, but we will most likely carry on as the group has in the past, seeking for meals for new mothers via email.
            C.  Council meetings vs. Spouse Socials.
1.The Council discussed the need for a separation between business meetings and Spouse Socials.  It was decided that the Council would hold its meetings separate from the Spouses’ monthly social to ensure that the Spouses can have a place to come each month and simply socialize and be uplifted and encouraged.  We fill that by separating these meetings we can better support the Spouses and hopefully, grow in number and get more Spouses out to meetings/socials. Also discussed the venue of our socials and whether or not to change it.
2. We discussed opening our Council meetings to those interested in being more involved, but would make a clear distinction between being a Council member (president, vice president, secretary a, secretary b) and being involved in the meetings.

V. Moving Forward- Items to be worked on before next meeting or discussed further in next meeting on Monday, May 9th at Miranda Marrott’s home, 2 Chestnut Way.
            A. Private Org packet-  To be put together by Miranda Marrott and emailed to the rest of the Council by Sunday, May 1, 2011.  To be reviewed and agreed upon or suggestions submitted to Miranda Marrott by Wednesday, May 4, 2011.  To be signed at the Spouses’ Group meeting on Thursday, May 5, 2011.  Also to ask P.O. Liaison if becoming a P.O. before the 4th of July would effect that fundraiser/partnership with Defender Council.
            B. Welcome Baskets- To get a list of new families arriving in May and June.  To get an inventory of all items in stock (cereal, peanut butter, etc.).  To find out, if possible, TLF arrangements of new families so that we can better plan our baskets.  To decide on the best delivery options.  Ashley and Rebecca volunteered to deliver.  It was also discussed that maybe we could rotate months and take turns delivering.
            C. 4th of July Fundraiser-  Find out dates and times for baking at the Chapel.  Decide who much supplies an equipment we will need… as well as volunteers to bake and sale.
            D. Organize a list of pregnant Spouses to help with planning for Meals for Moms.
